Letters to the Editor — April 24, 2023

The Issue: An investigation into allegations of abusive courtroom behavior by Judge Naita Semaj.

We now know that pro-criminal Judge Naita Semaj is incompetent (“Disorder in the court,” April 21).

How do we get rid of someone so incapable of doing quality legal work? The facts of her lunacy are undeniable.

But let’s remember, it’s New York. Once a bad person is given power, it’s impossible to completely remove them. She’ll be doing traffic court next.

William Verderose

Brookyn

Every day that Naita Semaj sits as a judge in any courtroom, be it criminal or civil, is an insult to the integrity and public reputation of the New York judiciary.

This disgrace of a jurist must be removed with prejudice if public confidence can ever restored to a system that is already beset with insane political interference.

It has been suggested that she will be transferred (read dumped) to the civil division.

Having repeatedly shown gross incompetence and undisguised prejudice, she is no more fit to sit on civil cases, which can hold litigants personal and property lives in the balance.

She must go.

Mitch Schwefel

Barnegat, NJ

Unsurprisingly, an arrogant, unjust justice of the law, Semaj, has been accused of verbally abusive behavior toward a prosecutor in the courtroom.

Such a radical, pro-criminal judge should be benched rather than sit on the bench.

Robert Semel

Brooklyn

Elections have consequences.

New Yorkers have consistently voted for the progressives, which has allowed a radical like Semaj to become a judge and make a mockery of our criminal-justice system by pandering to criminals and insulting prosecutors.

If she is removed from the bench, she will no doubt cry racism and sexism.

The Issue: A group of young people who rioted in downtown Chicago for several days earlier this month.

It seems to me that Chicago is unwilling to fulfill the primary duty of any government: To protect the lives and property of its citizens (“New Chi mayor: Cut mob slack,” April 19). The same applies to many other US cities.

The solution is as effective and as old as civilization itself: Riots and looting must be crushed immediately and ruthlessly.

The argument that rioting and looting are really just forms of protest is not only naive and silly, it is also irrelevant and downright dangerous.

When a society allows riots and looting, law-abiding people die or have their lives ruined.

Chicago’s new mayor should make it clear that rioters and looters will be arrested and punished to the full extent of the law.

What happened in Chicago is, unfortunately, only a prelude to what will undoubtedly happen at the Garden State Mall in New Jersey.

Similar to Chicago’s Millennium Park, the mall instituted a policy recently of preventing unescorted teens from entering without an adult during evening hours to cut down on unruly behavior, as experienced in the past. It’ll just be different cops getting overrun.

Tim Sullivan

Westwood, NJ

I feel sorry for the people of Chicago, sort of.

After the teenage takeover of the Windy City’s downtown area, and the violent behavior that ensued, I’m wondering why Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson said not to demonize the rampaging hordes of young people.

Looks to me as things won’t be changing too much in that once-great city any time soon.
