Report: Biden Might Send 1,500 Troops to Border
President Joe Biden is reportedly considering sending 1,500 active-duty troops to the southern border as the administration prepares for the end of Title 42 restrictions.
Fox News national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin first reported Tuesday that the administration is “weighing” the decision to send 1,500 troops to the border to help with ongoing security efforts, which would involve soldiers from a “variety of active duty Army units,” who would take up “admin and transport roles to free up” the Border Patrol and local law enforcement.
Griffin noted: “This is the model used by the Trump admin. The U.S. troops would be armed for self defense, not for law enforcement.”
The Biden administration previously announced several measures to stop illegal border crossings after the expiration of the COVID-19 immigration restrictions known as Title 42, which allowed the federal government to quickly turn away migrants at the border.
These include opening migrant processing centers in Latin American countries, speedily screening asylum seekers and deporting those who do not qualify, as well as penalizing those who enter the country illegally.
The Biden administration deployed about 2,500 National Guard troops to the southern border last fall in response to a request for security help from the Department of Homeland Security.
At the time, a spokesperson for U.S. Northern Command told the Washington Examiner: “The Department of Defense’s mission-enhancing support enables Customs and Border Protection to address security challenges and conduct their law enforcement mission more efficiently along the southern border.”
