Turkey Agrees to Admit Sweden Into NATO; Judge Rejects DOJ Request in Social Media Censorship Case

Sweden is set to join NATO as the military alliance’s 32nd member following its acceptance by Turkey. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced on July 10 that a meeting between Turkish President Recep Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson resulted in an understanding being reached between the two powers.

Meanwhile, President Biden has kicked off his five-day trip to Europe. Following a stop in the UK, he will join the NATO summit on July 11 and 12 in Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital. NATO leaders will work to address the “great challenges of our time,” including rising security threats from Russia and the climate crisis, according to the White House.

A federal judge denied the Department of Justice’s request to stay a ruling that places limits on government communications with social media firms, rejecting the White House’s argument that such an order could put a damper on law enforcement activity online.
