In Conversation with Newsmax, Ben Carson Suggests Cognitive Tests and Term Limits Are Essential

Former Trump cabinet member Ben Carson has suggested that elected officials should face cognitive testing and term limits. He argued that America’s founders did not anticipate politicians wanting to hold onto power for extended periods of time, which can be problematic as people age and deteriorate both mentally and physically. Carson pointed to recent cognitive lapses by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senator Dianne Feinstein as examples. He proposed that cognitive testing should begin at age 70 and recommended a simple exam that includes questions and a mental status examination. Carson also supported implementing term limits to address the issue of aging leaders unwilling to give up political power. He suggested that President Joe Biden, who is 80 years old, may be avoiding cognitive testing. Carson emphasized that the tests are not complex and are meant to ensure that elected officials have adequate cognitive functioning. He criticized the current administration for not implementing these measures. Carson’s remarks were made during an appearance on Newsmax’s “Wake Up America,” a cable news channel that is experiencing rapid growth.
