GOP Senator Tim Scott Scheduled to Visit Southern Border as Part of Campaign Tour

GOP presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott will be visiting the US southern border in Yuma, Arizona, on Friday to address the issue of illegal immigration and cartel groups. This will be Scott’s first visit to the border as a 2024 candidate. In a statement, he emphasized the importance of controlling the southern border, comparing it to controlling the back door of one’s house.

The number of migrant arrests at the southern border has seen a recent surge. In July alone, there were over 130,000 arrests, marking a significant increase from the approximately 100,000 arrests made in June. The increase in illegal crossings in the deserts of southern Arizona has been particularly notable, with agents making around 40,000 arrests in July, the highest one-month total in 15 years.

Republican lawmakers and presidential candidates have criticized President Joe Biden’s handling of the southern border, which has seen record-high illegal crossings in recent years. Other GOP figures, such as former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, have also visited the border to assess the situation.

Scott’s visit to the southern border is part of his efforts to address the issue of illegal immigration and present his plans to combat it as a potential president.
