Mexican President Commends DOJ’s Lawsuit Against Texas in Celebration

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott over the Department of Justice’s lawsuit to remove the floating border barrier that Texas installed in the Rio Grande. During a news conference, Lopez Obrador stated that it was not Governor Abbott’s place to meddle in international affairs and called the lawsuit a publicity stunt. He also claimed that the barrier divides people from Mexico and Texas instead of uniting them. Lopez Obrador suggested that Hispanic populations in Texas, as well as Latin American migrants, would vote against Abbott in response to his actions. This is not the first time Lopez Obrador has called for Hispanics to oppose Republican politicians, as he previously urged Florida Hispanics not to support Governor Ron DeSantis due to his stance on illegal immigration. Additionally, the Biden administration proposed federal protection for two freshwater mussel species found in the Rio Grande, potentially forcing Abbott to remove the barrier and designating the area as critical habitat.
