Sinema expresses anger over NYC receiving federal funds for migrants

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona expressed anger over New York City receiving federal funding for housing migrants. Sinema, who is an independent after initially being a Democrat, stated that while the border crisis affected the entire country, Arizona and Texas were the most impacted and yet were not receiving adequate assistance. She argued that it was unfair that funds were going to places like New York City that were not border states and did not face the same pressure. Sinema specifically criticized the $104.6 million from FEMA that New York City was set to receive for housing over 56,000 migrants, which she believed was not appropriate under the Shelter and Services Program. She pledged to continue fighting against this allocation and expressed her strong displeasure. The FEMA funding was initially announced by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, both Democrats from New York, who emphasized the need for cooperation from the GOP to address the national issue of migration.
