Bill to Repeal DC Home Rule Introduced by Republicans
Three Republican congressmen have introduced legislation to remove Washington, D.C.’s ability to operate as an independent local government. The bill aims to repeal the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, which currently allows the district to establish its own council and mayorship. The congressmen argue that increasing violent crime rates in the city necessitate Congress reclaiming control. However, the measure is unlikely to pass, and if it does, Congress would be responsible for all aspects of the D.C. government.
