Chicago Democrat Requests Gangs to Restrict Shooting Incidents to Late Hours
A Chicago Democrat alderwoman, Maria Hadden, is promoting a proposal from community group Native Sons that asks gang members to limit shooting guns in the city to overnight hours. The proposal, called “The People’s Ordinance,” asks gang members to refrain from shooting between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Native Sons co-founder Tatiana Atkins explains that the goal is to address the city’s gun violence problem strategically and not all at once. The proposal also asks people to stop associating with and glorifying “shooters” and wearing ski masks, which perpetuates violence. No legislation has been drafted to enforce the proposal. Chicago has been grappling with a significant increase in gun violence under new Mayor Brandon Johnson, with a 40% increase in the homicide rate and other concerning crime statistics. Johnson has not supported hiring more police officers and favors having health professionals respond to crisis calls instead of police.
