Joe Biden visited Maui, a wildfire-hit island, after facing criticism for his initial response to the crisis. The president and first lady, Jill Biden, arrived on the island 13 days after the wildfires, which caused significant damage and claimed at least 114 lives. During his visit, Biden promised that the federal government would support Maui’s recovery efforts for as long as necessary. He delivered a speech near a 150-year-old banyan tree that had been burned in the fires, calling it a symbol of resilience. Biden’s response to the wildfires had been criticized, with protestors calling for more relief for Maui and former president Donald Trump describing Biden’s actions as “disgraceful.” The White House defended Biden’s response, stating that he had been in close contact with local officials throughout the crisis. More than $8.5 million worth of aid has been distributed to affected families, and a chief federal response coordinator has been appointed to oversee long-term recovery efforts.
