BREAKING: Pastor James Coates of Alberta to Be Fully Acquitted of All COVID Charges

After more than two years of legal battles, Alberta Crown prosecutors are planning to ask the court to acquit Pastor James Coates and Grace Life Church of all charges related to pandemic restrictions. The decision comes after a court ruling on July 31 deemed the public health orders in the province invalid and enacted beyond the powers of the Public Health Act. In an email exchange, Edmonton Crown Prosecutor Karen Thorsrud expressed her intention to seek an acquittal for the pastor and stated that she would be writing to the court to inform them of the Crown’s intention. The acquittal proposal has been accepted by Pastor Coates, and his lawyer believes that the court decision will expose the Alberta government to civil liability. The ruling from July 31 declared that the government’s actions were illegal from the start, marking a significant moment for Canadian jurisprudence in relation to pandemic restrictions. Pastor Coates and his church were charged with violating the Public Health Act for holding in-person worship services during the pandemic. Despite facing arrest and imprisonment, the congregation continued to gather for worship in secret locations. The case gained international attention, and protests demanding Pastor Coates’ release were held. In April 2021, Grace Life Church was seized by the government, but the congregation remained steadfast in their commitment to exercising their constitutional rights. Following months of pressure and media attention, most of the charges against Pastor Coates and his church were eventually withdrawn, but they decided to proceed with challenging the constitutionality of the health orders in court.
