During a news conference, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida warned people to stay safe during Hurricane Idalia. Shortly after, a 100-year-old oak tree fell on the governor’s mansion, but no one was injured. Mr. DeSantis’ wife, Casey, expressed her prayers for those affected by the storm. The governor reported that there had been no deaths as a result of the storm but emphasized the importance of taking precautions and staying safe. He also mentioned that around 250,000 homes are without power. Idalia first hit Florida as a Category 3 storm and later moved into Georgia as a hurricane before being downgraded to a Category 2 storm. It is now a Category 1 storm and has caused flooding, with more water expected at high tide. Two men in Florida died in separate weather-related crashes, although it is unclear if the deaths were directly caused by Idalia. The storm has resulted in fires, roof damage, and temporary shutdowns of 911 centers in Florida. Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia reported heavy rainfall and power outages in some areas of the state. The storm still poses a significant risk, with the potential for strong winds to cause damage and endanger people.
