It was ironic when Fox News played his song at the opening of a Republican debate, considering the candidates’ pursuit of wealth and power. Anthony expressed frustration with both sides trying to claim him as their own or discredit him. He has now joined the ranks of whistleblowers who face polarizing animosity, name-calling, and confusion. However, his whistleblowing is unique since he sheds light on the realities of average American life to an audience with little understanding of it. Anthony’s music resonated with listeners and led to him gaining a devoted fan base, as seen during his recent performance in Farmville, Virginia. As someone who grew up facing economic hardships, the lyrics of his song deeply resonate with me. Unfortunately, despite the passing decades, the working class, including teachers, police officers, firefighters, and miners, have not seen significant improvements in their lives. Many individuals in Kentucky, where I am from, struggle to cover their expenses with their average household salaries, leading them to take on multiple jobs. A recent viral TikTok video by an Idaho teacher revealed her meager income after paying her bills, highlighting the difficulties faced by educators. It is deeply troubling how people blame her for her financial struggles. The average salary in Kentucky, after taxes, is $43,313, while the cost of living is $41,000 per person. This leaves only $2,313 for singles to save each year, with potential unexpected expenses quickly eating into that amount. The situation becomes even more dire for parents, as the cost of raising a child in Kentucky is $15,000. This means that individuals working with an average salary are left with a significant deficit. To make ends meet, many individuals work multiple jobs, as reflected in the increase of people with multiple jobholdings over the years. However, this lifestyle leaves little time for rest and enjoying life with their families. Despite their struggles, people like Anthony and the Idaho teacher are criticized for simply revealing the reality that the elite often try to hide. Anthony’s ability to connect with non-elites through his music has catapulted him to overnight fame. For most Americans, life is challenging, and it has only become more difficult over time. Shaming individuals like Anthony for singing about these hardships only exacerbates the problem. Politicians may try to appropriate Anthony’s lyrics, but they are truly blind to the struggles, unable to see, hear, or speak about the issues faced by average Americans.
