Eritrean Factions Involved in Violent Brawl in Calgary, Arrests Imminent

On September 2, a violent brawl occurred in Calgary between rival Eritrean factions. The conflict, which has spilled across borders in recent months, took place in the city’s northeast neighborhood of Falconridge. The Calgary Police Service (CPS) responded to reports of two groups engaged in violence, with up to 150 people initially involved, many armed with weapons. A witness video showed men throwing rocks and wielding long sticks and bats, wearing shirts with either the current or former Eritrean flag. Police arrived quickly, including some on horseback. At a press conference, CPS spokesperson Bennett Cliff O’Brien stated that there were several injuries and at least 10 people were taken to the hospital. The situation involved premeditation, and multiple arrests are expected. The clash was between groups with opposing views, as some accused festival events of supporting the current Eritrean regime, while others accused Eritrean exiles of instigating the attacks. Similar clashes have occurred in other Canadian cities as well as in Israel, Sweden, and Germany.
