The Smart Choice: Why Saying No to a SMART Meter Is the Right Decision

Imagine living in a social credit system where your energy could be cut off if you didn’t agree with the government’s narrative.

What is a SMART meter? SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Intelligence is not part of the acronym.

A SMART meter records a home’s energy use digitally and sends the information back to the retailer, eliminating the need for a technician to visit every few months. This saves retailers money. SMART meters were introduced in the United States in 2007 and were mandated by the European Union for implementation by 2022. In Australia, SMART meters have been commissioned since 2006 in Victoria, while approximately 30% of homes in New South Wales, Queensland, the Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory, and South Australia also have them. The Western Australian government plans to have all households equipped with SMART meters by 2027.

Can you refuse a SMART meter? In the United Kingdom, SMART meters are not mandatory, but energy companies can require customers to install them if their old meter is a safety hazard or not functional. In Australia, you can only refuse a SMART meter in certain states if your current meter is still working and you haven’t waived your right to opt-out when signing your electricity contract. In Victoria, however, SMART meters are mandatory.

SMART meters emit electromagnetic pulses, which create electromagnetic radiation (EMR). While utilities claim that usage data is only emitted a few times a day, the actual meter pulses every few seconds or more, potentially 192,000 times a day. EMR has been associated with DNA damage, cancer, tinnitus, fatigue, headaches, dizziness, nausea, and other health issues. Installing a SMART meter guard made of metal mesh or using RF-blocking paint inside your home can help reduce radiation exposure. Unplugging appliances that draw energy from the grid can also help eliminate “dirty electricity.”

Another concern with SMART meters is that suppliers have the ability to cut off your energy without warning. This raises concerns about potential abuse of power in a social credit system or in situations where individual liberty and privacy are compromised. Additionally, variable surge prices imposed by suppliers can make understanding and managing energy bills difficult, as prices can change every 30 minutes. There are also concerns about battery failures, fire risks, meter malfunctions, and vulnerability to cyber-attacks.
