Judge Sends 5 to Jail for Torture Killing in “Gangster Movie”

In October 2022, Koray Alpergin was abducted and tortured to death at an abandoned restaurant in London but a jury determined that only two men were guilty of manslaughter.
LONDON—Five men have been incarcerated due to their involvement in the abduction and killing of Turkish DJ and radio station owner Koray Alpergin, who was “horrifically tortured” to death in a disused restaurant in north London. 43-year-old Alpergin was kidnapped after taking his Turkish girlfriend, Gözde Dalbudak, 33, out for a meal in Mayfair on October 13, 2022, and was then taken to the Stadium Lounge, near Tottenham Hotspur’s stadium, where he suffered a total of 94 injuries.
His killers, acting on the orders of a notorious gang called the Tottenham Turks, had placed a tracker on Mr. Alpergin’s car and ambushed him as he arrived home.
On Tuesday, Tejean Kennedy, 32, was jailed for 20 years and Ali Kavak, 26, for 13 years, both for manslaughter, kidnap, and false imprisonment. Kavak additionally received a concurrent sentence for perverting the course of justice after disposing of the body and setting fire to the van Mr. Alpergin had been abducted in. Steffan Gordon, 34, was sentenced to eight years for kidnap and false imprisonment, and Samuel Owusu-Opoku, 29, was given seven years for kidnap. Yigit Hurman, 18, was sentenced to two years after admitting to perverting the course of justice. Two additional men, charged in October 2023, will stand trial next year on kidnap, false imprisonment, and murder charges. Ali Yildirim and Cem Orman are currently fugitives from justice, having fled the country.
The Tottenham Turks, also known as Tottenham Boys, have been prominent in north London’s underworld and have had a longstanding rivalry with a Hackney-based Turkish gang called the Bombacilar. The exact reason for Mr. Alpergin’s death is unclear, but the trial heard that some of the kidnappers had asked for the location of an item they suspected him of having. A post-mortem examination found Mr. Alpergin had suffered 94 separate injuries, including 14 rib fractures and brain damage.
After he died, Mr. Alpergin’s body was taken to the trunk of a stolen Renault Megane and then dumped in some woods in Loughton, where it was discovered by a man walking his dog. Ms. Dalbudak was locked in a toilet at the Stadium Lounge for two days but was eventually released. She gave a full account of what had happened to her to the police but then returned to Turkey and refused to give evidence.
