Speaker Johnson’s Plan to Contact Trump Regarding Funding Agreement

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said he plans to call former President Donald Trump to “talk him through the details” of the government funding deal worked out with Democrat leadership.

Johnson appeared Wednesday on The Hugh Hewitt Show and discussed the $1.59 trillion top-line spending agreement he made with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., during the weekend.

Hewitt asked the speaker whether Trump, the current front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, were helping to pass the deal, which has been criticized by House conservatives.

“I’m planning to give him a call today to talk him through the details of it,” Johnson told the host. “He’s a little busy. He’s got the Iowa Caucus and all these other things on his plate right now.

“He and I have a very close relationship. He’s been an enthusiastic supporter of my leadership here, and I expect he’ll be doing that again.”

Johnson, who has endorsed Trump in the GOP primary, has been fighting off heavy criticism from conservatives in his caucus over the funding deal.

With the GOP holding a 220-213 majority, Johnson can’t afford many defectors without getting help from Democrats.
