Electric Bus Fleet in South London Temporarily Removed after Fire Incident
Three fire engines and approximately 15 firefighters responded to the incident of a rush hour bus fire at Wimbledon Hill Road on Thursday. The electric bus fleet in south London has since been taken out of commission after one of the double-decker buses caught fire. The bus was promptly evacuated, and the fire was extinguished. Following the occurrence, Transport for London (TfL) declared that electric buses operating on route 200, which runs from Raynes Park to Mitcham, are being “temporarily withdrawn” by the operator GoAhead as a “precaution” while the investigation into the fire is ongoing.
Tom Cunnington, TfL’s head of bus business development, assured that London’s bus network is “safe to use” and mentioned that the affected buses are being thoroughly checked as a priority. He further stated that other buses in the fleet remain operational, but TfL and bus operators are prepared to take additional measures if necessary to ensure the safety of the network.
