Strong Earthquake Rattles Kyrgyzstan–Xinjiang Border Region: GFZ Reports Magnitude 7.0 Temblor
A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Kyrgyzstan–Xinjiang border region on Tuesday, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
GFZ stated that the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles).
The emergencies ministry in nearby Kazakhstan reported the same earthquake at a magnitude of 6.7.
Following the earthquake in Kazakhstan, residents of the largest city, Almaty, fled their homes and gathered outside in the cold weather, with some dressed in pajamas and slippers. Fortunately, no damage was reported.
The tremors and subsequent aftershocks, felt in Uzbekistan, occurred about 30 minutes after the initial earthquake.
