Collapse of Bridge Under Construction Over Dutch Canal Results in Death of 2 Workers
In the Hague, Netherlands, a tragic accident occurred when part of a bridge being constructed over a canal collapsed, resulting in two fatalities and two injuries, as reported by emergency services.
The incident took place in Lochem, approximately 130 kilometers (80 miles) east of Amsterdam, during the lifting of a large metal arch into place.
Nieke Hoitink, a journalist with regional newspaper De Stentor, witnessed the event and described how the arch, hanging from a crane, suddenly collapsed, causing two construction workers to fall.
The regional security organization coordinating first responders confirmed the fatalities and injuries in a message on X (formerly Twitter), expressing condolences to the victims’ loved ones.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing. The Netherlands, known for its strict workplace health and safety regulations, generally experiences few such incidents.
