Canadian Media Guild and CBC agree on tentative deal
The Canadian Media Guild has struck a tentative agreement with CBC/Radio Canada.
According to a statement released by the union, the agreement has received the endorsement of its negotiating committee and is currently being shared with its 4,400-plus members.
The existing collective agreement had been scheduled to expire on March 31.
A vote to approve the tentative agreement is set to take place in the coming weeks, as stated by the union.
Last fall, the public broadcaster announced plans to cut around 600 positions, with an additional 200 vacancies remaining unfilled due to an anticipated budget deficit of $125 million.
CBC attributed the layoffs, which account for 10 percent of their workforce, to a government mandate to reduce their budget by 3.3 percent. However, the federal government has refuted issuing such an order.
