Rep. Mark Green, Supported by Trump, Cancels Plans to Retire
House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green, R-Tenn., had a change of heart about retiring and has decided to seek reelection after receiving encouragement from various Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, to stay in Congress.
“While my initial plan was to leave Congress at the end of this year, I have been inundated with calls from constituents, colleagues, and President Trump urging me to reconsider,” Green stated on Thursday, as reported by Axios.
Reflecting on the words of Gen. McArthur, Green, a former Army officer, realized his duty to his country and decided to continue serving.
Trump publicly endorsed Green’s decision to seek reelection, praising him on Truth Social and offering his full support if Green chooses to run again.
When Green announced his retirement on Feb. 14, he cited the completion of his goals and a desire to engage in other fights as the reasons for his decision, as reported by CNN.
Initial reports suggested that Green was considering a gubernatorial run in Tennessee.
Other House Republican committee chairs, such as Financial Services Chairman Patrick McHenry, Appropriations Chairwoman Kay Granger, and Energy and Commerce Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, have announced that they will not seek reelection.
