When terror found me
My experience, which occurred in August 1978 in Tehran, does not directly relate to the current situation of Israeli hostages, but it evoked a similar feeling of terror. This experience is a reason why I am at the New York Post.
I had connections with the shah and visited Iran, where I was received in Saadabad Palace.
During my time in Iran, I witnessed riots, including a cinema being set on fire and hundreds of people being killed. The situation was chaotic with crowds surging and the name of Ayatollah Khomeini being shouted.

After being packed up in the middle of the night and taken to Isfahan in a black car where I was told about the danger I was in, I was eventually evacuated to Tehran and flown out of Iran by Pan Am amidst the chaos of the political situation.
In 1979, the Iranian coup and the hostage crisis at the American Embassy occurred, further adding to the atmosphere of terror and uncertainty in Iran.
Ben Affleck’s 2012 Oscar-winning “Argo” portrayed a cinematic version of this significant event in American history.
Later, the shah sought refuge in New York, where I had the opportunity to visit him at the hospital on his request.
My experience with the shah led to me joining the New York Post in 1981, where I became a part of a unique and memorable journalistic environment.
