Hungary’s Prime Minister Orban Backs Trump Following Meeting in Florida

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban expressed his support for former U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign to return to the White House after a meeting in Florida on Friday.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed various issues concerning Hungary and the United States, with a focus on the importance of strong borders to protect each country’s sovereignty, according to a statement from Trump’s campaign.

Orban has been at odds with other European Union members on several topics, such as his refusal to send weapons to Ukraine and his efforts to maintain economic relations with Moscow following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Orban believes that only Trump’s return to the White House can bring peace to Ukraine, stating, “We need respected leaders who can bring peace. He is one of them! Come back and bring us peace, Mr. President!,” in a post on X after the meeting.

Known for his tough immigration policies, family support programs, and strong stance on national sovereignty, Orban praised the peace achieved in the Middle East and Ukraine during Trump’s presidency from 2017 to 2021.

He argued that there would not be a war in Ukraine at present if Trump had been re-elected in 2020.

Orban has faced criticism from the EU for his anti-immigration campaigns and efforts to increase government control over the judiciary, NGOs, and media, which some say have weakened democracy in Hungary.

Although he has criticized EU sanctions against Russia, Orban did not ultimately veto them and delayed EU aid for Ukraine until early this year.
