Blinken Participates in Critical Meeting with Caribbean Leaders Amid Escalating Violence Crisis in Haiti

Haiti declared a state of emergency on March 3 due to escalating gang violence on the island, prompting increased calls for the resignation of the country’s prime minister.

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken participated in a high-level meeting with Caribbean leaders in Jamaica on Monday to address the crisis unfolding in Haiti amidst rising gang violence.

Since 2021, instances of violent crimes like home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and murders have surpassed the capacity of the police to respond. The death toll has risen significantly since the beginning of the year, leaving many homeless and in need of basic supplies.

According to a statement released on March 11 by Secretary Blinken’s office, the high-level meeting aimed to expedite a political transition in Haiti through the creation of a broad-based, independent presidential college.
One of the meeting’s agenda items was the deployment of a Multinational Security Support Mission to address the ongoing security crisis. In a post on social media on March 11, Mr. Blinken emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to combat the violence in Haiti.

“It is crucial that we unite to assist the Haitian people, reduce escalating violence and unrest, and expedite a political transition,” he stated.
