MPs Approve Watered-Down Israel-Gaza Motion as Liberals Avoid Vote on Recognizing Palestine Statehood
OTTAWA—Members of Parliament have approved a significantly modified version of an NDP motion that originally called for the official recognition of the state of Palestine.
The revised version of the motion, while not binding, emphasizes Canada’s commitment to actively pursue the establishment of a Palestinian state as part of a negotiated two-state solution, aligning with the country’s existing policy.
The New Democrats initially proposed a motion urging the Liberals to recognize Palestinian statehood, among other actions.
However, a last-minute amendment significantly softened the motion, much to the disappointment of the Opposition Conservatives.
Despite their objections, both the amendment and the new motion were passed by a margin of 204-117.
Montreal Liberal MP Anthony Housefather and former cabinet minister Marco Mendicino, both critical of their party’s approach to the conflict, voted against both versions.
