Democratic Senators Advocate for Two-State Solution in Gaza Conflict in Letter to Biden Administration

A group of 19 Democratic senators have sent a letter to President Joe Biden, urging the establishment of a foundation to create a two-state solution for the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Spearheaded by Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), the initiative called for a “bold, public framework” to develop a non-militarized Palestinian state in post-war Gaza based on diplomatic negotiations, as stated by the senator’s office.

The senators emphasized the need for U.S. leadership to move beyond facilitation and address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, leading to starvation and malnutrition among citizens due to the conflict.

They requested the Biden Administration to promptly outline steps for recognizing a non-militarized Palestinian state, encompassing the West Bank and Gaza, under a revamped Palestinian Authority governance.

Signatories of the letter included Democratic senators from various states, such as Tammy Baldwin (Wis.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Chris Coons (Del.), Dick Durbin (Ill.), and others.

The senators also called for a reformation of the Palestinian authority, focusing on peace-building efforts in areas like judiciary, education, and security systems, while addressing corruption and violence incitement.

Shortly after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) reaffirmed support for a two-state solution and criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an “obstacle to peace,” the senators made their appeal.

Concerns were raised regarding Mr. Netanyahu’s opposition to a two-state solution and Senator Schumer called for new elections in Israel.

Moreover, the senators emphasized the need for any future Palestinian governing body to align with Israel and renounce terrorist activities, particularly Hamas, while condemning violence by Jewish settlers and advocating for Palestinian rights.

They urged the Biden administration to pressure Israel to limit violence, halt settlement construction, release customs revenues to the Palestinian Authority, and reactivate work permits for Palestinians entering Israel from the West Bank.
