House Intelligence Committee to Appoint New Members After GOP Resignations

The House Intelligence Committee is in need of two new Republican members after the resignations of Reps. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., and Chris Stewart, R-Utah, as reported by the Washington Examiner.

Stewart left his post in September due to his wife’s health issues. Gallagher recently announced his retirement from Congress on April 19, which will result in Republicans holding only a one-seat majority in the House.

Both Stewart and Gallagher were members of the House Intel panel, so the GOP Steering Committee, led by House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., will need to select two replacements for the committee.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner, R-Ohio, confirmed to the Washington Examiner that he is collaborating with Speaker Johnson to fill the vacancies.

Johnson’s office declined to provide an update on committee appointments. However, Johnson did announce that Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Mich., will assume the role of chair for the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.

In addition to the House Intel panel, the Steering Committee will also need to address vacancies on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and Financial Services Committee, as Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., and Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., are both set to retire at the end of the current term.
