Blinken: The US Anticipates Collaborating with the New Palestinian Government

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently spoke with Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas to express the Biden administration’s readiness to collaborate with the newly established government in Ramallah.

During the conversation, Blinken emphasized the United States’ desire to work with the new P.A. Cabinet to promote peace, security, and prosperity, and urged the implementation of necessary reforms, as per State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller.

Blinken also highlighted the importance of a revitalized P.A. in delivering positive outcomes for the Palestinian people in both the West Bank and Gaza. He mentioned that the U.S. is actively working towards advancing a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas to facilitate humanitarian assistance into Gaza and pave the way for lasting peace.

The top American diplomat reiterated the U.S. commitment to achieving an independent Palestinian state with security guarantees for Israel.

Abbas, on the other hand, stressed the urgency of halting Israeli aggression in Gaza and ensuring the prompt delivery of essential supplies like medical aid, food, water, electricity, and fuel to the Gaza Strip.

Following a handover ceremony in Ramallah, newly appointed P.A. Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa assumed his duties, succeeding Mohammad Shtayyeh, who resigned last month to address the evolving situation in Gaza.

Mustafa, along with 22 other ministers, aims to gain the trust of the Palestinian people and international community through administrative reforms and potential elections in the future.

The Biden administration’s proposal for the P.A. to take control of Gaza post-Israeli military operations is a contentious issue, as Jerusalem opposes Ramallah’s support for terrorism.
