Speaker Johnson speaks to Newsmax about the release of 13,000 hours of Jan. 6 tapes

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., informed Newsmax on Monday that 13,000 hours of the Jan. 6 tapes have been released so far. He mentioned that new staff was hired specifically to support the “24-hour operation.”

During an interview with “Eric Bolling The Balance”, Johnson stated that the tapes consist of about five years’ worth of video footage.

“We’re releasing them in large batches, and so far 13,000 out of the 40,000 hours have been made public,” Johnson told Bolling. “It takes time to upload and process them, hence the delay in releasing all of them. If you calculate, it’s equivalent to five years’ worth of videotape.”

In November, Johnson announced that all 44,000 hours of video from the Capitol Hill riots on Jan. 6, 2021, would be released. This decision came after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., chose not to make them public and restricted access to a limited group.

“I made a commitment right after taking office that we would begin releasing the videos. Initially, we were blurring faces to protect innocent individuals who were just present at the scene,” Johnson explained. “However, we later realized that much of the footage was already in the public domain.”

“We are releasing them as quickly as possible. We had to hire additional staff for this purpose – they are working around the clock to upload it. Every tape will be available to the public soon,” he added.
