Cardinal Gregory of Washington refers to Biden as a ‘Selective Catholic’

The Cardinal Wilton Gregory, the archbishop of Washington, D.C., criticized President Joe Biden for selectively following certain aspects of the Roman Catholic faith while ignoring others. He likened Biden to a “cafeteria Catholic” who picks and chooses elements of the faith to adhere to. According to Gregory, Biden is sincere in his faith but tends to highlight certain parts while disregarding or contradicting other teachings. Gregory made these remarks during an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

Biden, who is the second Catholic president in U.S. history after John F. Kennedy, has been called out by Gregory for neglecting certain issues, particularly those related to promoting life. Gregory pointed out that Biden sometimes uses contentious issues as political tools rather than prioritizing the teachings of his church.

The cardinal emphasized the importance of respecting life from beginning to end and criticized Biden for cherry-picking which life issues to support. He expressed his concern that Biden’s approach to these issues does not align with the principles of the Catholic faith.

In his recent State of the Union address, Biden pledged to reinstate a national abortion rule similar to Roe v. Wade if given the opportunity in a second term. This statement has drawn criticism from those who oppose abortion rights.

Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide, was overturned in 2022, shifting the issue back to the states. Gregory’s comments reflect the ongoing debate within the Catholic community regarding Biden’s interpretation and application of the faith.
