Calls for Canberra to Demand Release of Prisoners of Conscience Amid Growing Concerns for Torn Apart Families
Australian citizen Li Liu shared, “For the past 25 years, my extended family has never been reunited.”
Australian citizen Li Liu expressed her inability to recall the last time her family gathered.
In 1999, Ms. Liu’s mother, Yuhua Liu, faced an arrest when she protested in Beijing for her spiritual freedom rights.
Police officers mistreated the 60-year-old woman, using an electric shock baton and detaining her on the tiger bench for three days.
This form of torture has been applied to practitioners of Falun Gong, a peaceful meditation discipline facing 25 years of persecution by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
A Family Under Oppression
A year later, Ms. Liu’s auntie, Chunxia Liu, became a target. After being unlawfully dismissed and sent to a brainwashing center, Chunxia fled to avoid capture.
In 2002, Chunxia was re-arrested and imprisoned for five years, despite not committing any crimes. She resisted wearing the prison uniform, leading to guards stripping her naked and forcing her to endure the winter outdoors in Shaanxi.
