6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Japan’s Fukishima, Following Taiwanese Quake by a Day
Reports indicate that there were no immediate injuries following the earthquake, which originated 40 kilometres (25 miles) deep.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported a 6.0 magnitude earthquake off the east coast of Fukushima prefecture in Japan.
Fortunately, no tsunami warning was issued.
The earthquake, felt in Tokyo as well, did not result in any immediate injuries despite its epicentre depth of 40 kilometres (25 miles).
TEPCO, the operator of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, confirmed that their facilities were being inspected post-quake and had not shown any abnormalities according to initial readings.
This earthquake follows a recent incident in Taiwan where at least nine people lost their lives and over 1,000 were injured due to the strongest quake in 25 years.
Taiwan and Japan share the same active fault line of the Pacific Ring of Fire, home to high volcanic activity and numerous seismic events.
