House Democrats Introduce Legislation to Establish Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies

House Democrats have introduced two bills to establish DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) programs at the federal level.

As reported by The Hill, Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., and Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., introduced the Federal Government Equity Improvement Act and the Equity in Agency Planning Act.

The Federal Government Equity Improvement Act, led by Raskin, would create an Equity Subcommittee on the Performance Improvement Council to develop data and collaborate on delivering unbiased government services. The subcommittee would also gather input from federal program recipients.

Raskin emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in government services for all individuals, not just those with easier access.

Pressley’s legislation, the Equity in Agency Planning Act, would require federal agencies to focus on improving the equitable delivery of government services by working with stakeholders to develop and revise plans.

Both bills aim to build on President Joe Biden’s executive order advancing racial equity and support for underserved communities.

The fate of these bills remains uncertain due to Republican opposition to DEI initiatives, which they argue are discriminatory and divisive.
