MP Anthony Housefather decides to stay in Liberal Party following thorough deliberation on Palestine vote

Liberal MP Anthony Housefather has made the decision to continue serving as a Liberal MP after taking some time to reflect on the party’s stance on a motion regarding Palestinian statehood.

“The adoption of the motion and all the events that preceded it have angered me as much as they angered most of the Jewish Canadians that I have communicated with,” Mr. Housefather, who is Jewish, said in an April 5 press release.

“But I also know that my core values remain Liberal ones and after serious reflection, I believe my greatest value to Canadians is staying in caucus.”

Mr. Housefather was one of three Liberal MPs who voted against an amended NDP motion on March 18 calling for the recognition of Palestinian statehood. The revised motion from NDP MP Heather McPherson sought to work with the international community to establish the “State of Palestine as part of a negotiated two-state solution.”

The updated motion also identified Hamas as a terrorist organization, called for the group to lay down its arms, and adjusted the language regarding Canada’s export of military goods and technology to Israel.

During Israel’s conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Mr. Housefather expressed his concerns about civilian casualties and the need for a peaceful resolution.

Advocate for ‘Centrist Classical Liberal Party’

In his statement, Mr. Housefather mentioned receiving feedback from Canadians across the country, clarifying that his decision would not please everyone.

Despite the contentious nature of the motion, Mr. Housefather believed in advocating for the centrist classical Liberal values he aligns with.

He stressed the importance of defending minority rights, supporting Canadian businesses, meeting NATO commitments, maintaining a balanced budget, and addressing rising anti-Semitism.

Mr. Housefather disclosed plans to collaborate with the Prime Minister and the government on these critical issues, including working with the Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combating Antisemitism, Deborah Lyons.
