Canada’s Women’s Hockey Team Defeats USA to Claim Gold at World Championship

UTICA, N.Y.—Danielle Serdachny scored with a rebound in front 5:16 into overtime for a power-play goal, leading Canada to a 6-5 victory over the United States in the women’s world hockey championship gold medal game on Sunday.

Canada’s win secured its 13th gold medal in the tournament, this time on U.S. soil in central New York, following the Americans’ win outside of Toronto the year before.

Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin netted two goals, Julia Gosling also scored, and Erin Ambrose and Emily Clark scored off shots that deflected off U.S. defenseman Caroline Harvey. Ann-Renee Desbiens made 19 saves, including a crucial stop on Harvey’s wrap-around attempt in overtime.

Harvey and Laila Edwards contributed a goal and assist each for the Americans, who ended the tournament with a 6-1 record. Hilary Knight, Megan Keller, and Alex Carpenter also scored for the U.S.

Serdachny’s winning goal came during a U.S. penalty for too many players. After Ambrose’s initial shot was saved by Aerin Frankel, Serdachny found the loose puck and put it in the net.

Frankel, who recorded four shutouts in the tournament, finished with 24 saves.

The intense rivalry between the neighboring nations was on display once again, making for a thrilling game.

This was the 10th time in 36 world championship meetings that the game went into overtime, and the first time in a gold-medal game since 2021. It was also the highest-scoring game between the two teams since 2015.

With both teams now tied at 18-18 in world championship meetings, Canada holds a slim 104-103 edge in goals scored.
