Terry Hill, a former Rugby League Premiership champion, passes away from a heart attack.
Hill, known for his tough and uncompromising style, played 246 first-grade games and represented NSW and Australia.
The Australian rugby league community is mourning the loss of Terry Hill, who reportedly passed away from a heart attack in the Philippines at the age of 52. Hill was married to a local in the Philippines and split his time between both countries. A former teammate, Craig Coleman, described him as a “good-hearted bloke” loved by everyone.
Tony Mestrov, the CEO of Hill’s former club Manly, expressed that Hill is a legend of the club and will be greatly missed by the fans. Hill had a successful career in the National Rugby League (NRL), showcasing his powerful runs, strong defense, and versatility on the field.
Beginning his NRL career in 1990, Hill played for various teams including South Sydney Rabbitohs, Western Suburbs Magpies, Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, and Wests Tigers. He had some of his most successful years with the Manly-Warringah team, winning the NRL Premiership in 1996 and 2008.
Hill’s representative career included playing for NSW in State of Origin matches and representing Australia on the kangaroo tour of Great Britain. Known for his aggressive style of play, Hill was a fan favorite and versatile player, capable of performing in multiple positions.
After retiring from professional rugby league, Hill continued his involvement in the sport as a commentator and analyst. He also worked in coaching and mentoring young players to develop the next generation of rugby league stars. Off the field, Hill supported various charitable causes and advocated for rugby league’s role in promoting health and fitness in communities.
Hill was well-known for his appearances on Channel 9’s Footy Show and was praised for his competitive spirit and sense of humor by former colleagues and friends in the rugby league community.
Just before his passing, Hill was in the Philippines with friend David “Cement” Gillespie, raising funds for a local orphanage through a promotional event. Gillespie described Hill as generous, relentless, tough, and uncompromising on the field, highlighting his enduring legacy in the sport.
