NBC Poll Shows Trump Surpassing Biden in Competency by 21 Points

Former President Donald Trump is seen as more “competent” and “effective” by registered voters compared to President Joe Biden, marking a significant increase of almost 21 points from 2020, as per a recent NBC News poll.

This shift in perception is a complete reversal from four years ago, as noted by NBC News anchor Kristen Welker when comparing past polling data. She mentioned, “We actually polled this question in 2020. And it was basically the exact opposite. It was Biden with about a 10-point advantage over Trump.”

The poll reveals that 47% of voters view Trump as more “competent” and “effective” in comparison to only 36% for Biden. Welker pointed out that this was a key aspect of Biden’s campaign message in 2020.

Analyst Steve Kornacki highlighted the distinct dynamic of a former President challenging a sitting President, showing a clear distinction in leadership perception among voters. The poll also indicates a 4-point preference for Trump over Biden in terms of crisis management.

Kornacki further emphasized Trump’s strong standings in terms of perceived record as president, as well as mental and physical health compared to Biden, noting these numbers as concerning for the current President.

According to the poll, 45% of voters see Trump as having the necessary mental and physical health to fulfill presidential duties, while only 26% believe the same for Biden.

NBC News conducted the survey with a sample of 1,000 registered voters from April 12-16, with a margin of error of 3.1%.
