AI Technology Worsens Child Sexual Exploitation Cases: Australian Federal Police

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner Reece Kershaw issued a warning that artificial intelligence (AI) technology was posing a greater challenge in the fight against child sex abuse.

In a speech at the National Press Club of Australia on April 24, Commissioner Kershaw highlighted how criminals were utilizing AI to create fake images of child sex abuse, which were becoming increasingly indistinguishable from real ones.

He referred to a report by the Internet Watch Foundation that showcased the alarming realism of AI-generated images over time.

Commissioner Kershaw noted that these fake images, which were now incredibly lifelike, were causing significant difficulties for analysts in identifying them accurately, even featuring the faces of actual victims.

He raised concerns about the potential impact on law enforcement resources, emphasizing the need for collaboration between tech companies and authorities to address the issue.

Despite measures on social media platforms to combat AI-generated child abuse materials, Commissioner Kershaw stressed that there was no definitive solution, as offenders continually found ways to evade technological safeguards.

He urged tech companies to step up their cooperation with law enforcement to safeguard children from online exploitation.

Commissioner Kershaw also highlighted the concerning rise in online child sexual exploitation cases in Australia, emphasizing the urgency of addressing this growing threat.
