Rep. Foxx tells Newsmax: ‘Asylum at Columbia Being Run by Inmates’
Columbia University President Minouche Shafik and the school’s board of trustees need to take control of the pro-Palestinian protesters who are camping there, as Rep. Virginia Foxx, who recently visited the campus with a House delegation led by Speaker Mike Johnson, said on Newsmax Sunday that it seems like “the inmates are running the asylum.”
Foxx, a North Carolina Republican, expressed concern for the Jewish students at the university who feel threatened and unable to study on campus due to the protests. She emphasized the need for a safe and inclusive environment for all students, especially Jewish students, and questioned why school officials are negotiating with the protesters instead of asking them to leave.
While some lawmakers have called for Shafik’s resignation, Foxx mentioned that her committee is still gathering information before making any statements about the university president. She also criticized the university’s decision not to involve the New York Police Department in handling the situation, pointing out the lack of consequences for the protesters’ actions.
Foxx highlighted the unfairness of the situation to the students, noting that many may not be able to participate in commencement exercises this year. She emphasized the need for strong leadership at the university and consequences for disruptive behavior by a minority of students.
