Chief Senate GOP Campaign: ‘We Don’t Expect to Outraise Dems’
National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Daines, R-Mont., expressed confidence on Thursday that Republicans will secure a net gain of at least two Senate seats this year, despite Democrats having a fundraising advantage in major races.
“We will never be able to outfundraise the Democrats,” Daines told Newsmax. “As Republicans, we understand that Democrats will typically raise more money than us in races.”
Daines referenced his own reelection campaign in 2020, where he was significantly outraised by Democrat Gov. Steve Bullock. Despite this fundraising gap, Daines still managed to secure nearly 55% of the vote, according to Open Secrets.
Looking at the ongoing Senate races, Democrats are leading in fundraising in most competitive races. For instance, in Ohio, Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown raised $12 million in the first quarter of 2024, while Republican opponent Bernie Moreno has not disclosed his fundraising numbers for the same period.
In Pennsylvania, Democrat Sen. Bob Casey raised over $5.6 million in the first quarter, compared to Republican challenger David McCormick’s $6.2 million (with $1 million being a personal loan).
Addressing concerns about Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas, Daines mentioned that Cruz may be outraised due to his national profile. However, Daines believes that increased spending may not have a significant impact on the outcome, citing examples of similar races in Kentucky and South Carolina.
Regarding Cruz’s race, Daines highlighted a recent poll showing Cruz leading Democratic Rep. Colin Allred by a double-digit margin.
Daines shared these insights at a press breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.
