John O’Hurley tells Newsmax that Humor is Essential to Maintaining Mental Health

Actor John O’Hurley expressed his views on how political correctness is impacting comedy during an interview with Newsmax on Monday.

Best known for his role as J. Peterman on “Seinfeld,” O’Hurley echoed Jerry Seinfeld’s recent statement about the far left prioritizing not offending over being funny.

“I think he’s absolutely right,” O’Hurley remarked to “National Report.” “The first thing to go in any push for social change is typically our collective sense of humor and our ability to laugh at ourselves, which is crucial for mental well-being.”

O’Hurley noted how in today’s society, comedians feel pressured to ensure their content is socially acceptable before evoking laughter from their audience. Many fear backlash on social media platforms for saying something deemed inappropriate.

“One misstep can ruin careers instantly,” O’Hurley explained. “Just the fear of being criticized for being politically incorrect is enough to silence many writers.”

Reflecting on history, O’Hurley expressed hope that this phase of heightened sensitivity is nearing its end.

“The current climate is unique because these ideologies are deeply rooted in politics and religion, making it harder to break free from,” O’Hurley observed. “But humor is essential for our mental health, especially during challenging times.”

Regarding the show “Seinfeld,” O’Hurley speculated that if it were airing today, the comedy’s script would undergo extensive scrutiny during rehearsals.
