Putin of Russia Takes Oath for Fifth Term, Stresses Need for ‘Multipolar World Order’
Longstanding leader, Vladimir Putin of Russia, has been inaugurated for a fifth term after winning the recent elections. The ceremony took place at the Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow, attended by various officials and foreign dignitaries.
In his post-inaugural speech, Mr. Putin emphasized the need for dialogue with the West on security and strategic stability without arrogance, conceit, or exceptionalism. He stressed the importance of treating parties as equals and considering each other’s interests.
Mr. Putin also highlighted the Eurasian integration process and Moscow’s commitment to a multipolar world order. He criticized the Western-led unipolar world, emphasizing Russia’s priorities of population growth, preserving cultural values, and strengthening global ties.
Despite some Western countries choosing not to send representatives to the ceremony, Mr. Putin’s controversial win in the recent election secured his position for another term. Critics question the validity of the results, as Mr. Putin’s strong showing was preceded by high approval ratings.
The election saw Mr. Putin defeat three challengers, with the United Russia party endorsing his candidacy. The annexation of Ukrainian territories by Russia led to international condemnation, particularly from Ukraine and the U.S., who labeled the elections in those regions as sham.
Despite being portrayed as a dictator and war criminal in the West, Mr. Putin continues to enjoy broad support among his constituents in Russia. Over his almost 25-year rule, he has been credited with restoring the country’s stability and standing up to Western hegemony.
