Senator Burlison Tells Newsmax: College Administrators are Giving in to Demonstrators

Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., expressed his views on college administrators who cancel graduation ceremonies in response to concerns about pro-Gaza demonstrations, stating on Newsmax that they are appeasing the protesters.

“They’re surrendering their campuses to these protesters, and they’re only enabling them and empowering them to do more,” he commented on “Wake Up America.” Burlison criticized the practice of forgiving protesters’ records or negotiating scholarships, calling it “absolutely ridiculous” and accusing campuses of giving benefits to students for protests.

Burlison’s statements were made in response to Columbia University’s decision to cancel its main, university-wide commencement ceremony due to ongoing pro-Palestinian protests that had disrupted the campus in the past weeks.

Columbia issued a statement saying, “We have decided to make the centerpiece of our commencement activities our Class Days and school-level ceremonies, where students are honored individually alongside their peers, rather than the university-wide ceremony that is scheduled for May 15,” according to Reuters.

Burlison also criticized President Joe Biden for bringing up Islamophobia and antisemitism in discussions about the protests, stating, “It’s not part of the discussion…when you bring it in, you’re muddling the water and you’re giving some form of equivalency to this hate.”

He emphasized Israel as a nation that allows both Jews and Muslims to live together peacefully, unlike neighboring countries where violence against minority groups occurs.

“Look, this is right against wrong. This is good against evil, and I would say the evil is the hate groups that are hating against Israel,” concluded Burlison.
