Johnson and McConnell urge Biden to expedite aid to Israel
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., are urging President Joe Biden to promptly deliver the approved foreign military aid to Israel.
In a letter obtained by Newsmax to Biden dated Wednesday, the Republican leaders expressed their concern over reports that the Biden Administration had delayed weapons shipments to Israel. This delay contradicted previous assurances made about the timely delivery of security assistance to Israel.
Congress passed legislation last month, signed by Biden, providing $26.3 billion in aid to Israel and humanitarian assistance to Palestinians. However, the administration paused a shipment of bombs to Israel recently due to concerns about the country’s potential military operation in Gaza. Israel eventually launched the operation in Rafah, the final front in their conflict with Hamas in Gaza.
Johnson and McConnell emphasized the importance of not delaying security assistance to Israel, questioning Biden’s commitment to Israel’s security. They requested information on the ongoing reviews of weapons shipments and urged quick action to ensure the aid can proceed.
In a Senate hearing, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin assured that efforts would be made to support Israel’s defense. However, the lawmakers expressed frustration over not receiving information on the ongoing review from the State Department and Pentagon.
They highlighted the threats faced by Israel, stressing the importance of maintaining a strong relationship at this critical time. They called for responses from the administration on the timing of the review, potential pause of other shipments, and the responsible office for the review.
