Speaker Johnson Vows To Safeguard Jack Smith’s Employment

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., made it clear that he will not use Congressional funding powers to interfere with special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into former President Donald Trump, right after the motion to vacate the speaker’s chair was tabled.

“That’s not something you can simply eliminate with a wave of the wand. There is a need for a special counsel in cases where the Department of Justice, being part of the executive branch, may have a conflict of interest in investigating or prosecuting the president or his family,” Johnson told Politico.

Asked if he would attempt to eliminate Smith’s position through appropriations bills, Johnson firmly responded with a “no.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., who initially introduced the motion to vacate, criticized Johnson’s decision, posting on X about the speaker’s stance on stopping the investigation targeting President Trump.
