Rep. D’Esposito tells Newsmax: Graduation Guaranteed for 4th District Columbia Students

Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, R-N.Y., informed Newsmax on Friday that Columbia University students in his 4th Congressional District will have a graduation ceremony, regardless of Columbia President Minouche Shafik’s involvement.

Following recent anti-Israel protests at the university, Columbia canceled its graduation ceremony over safety concerns for students.

Speaking on “Wake Up America,” D’Esposito mentioned reaching out to Shafik for assistance in identifying students in his Long Island district, but has not received a response.

“Despite no response from the president, the community has shown overwhelming support,” said D’Esposito. “These students faced similar challenges during the pandemic when they couldn’t have their high school graduations, and now they’re being deprived of their commencement due to ineffective leadership at universities like Columbia.”

Expressing his disbelief at the cancellation of the commencement, D’Esposito criticized the lack of confidence in student safety. He also mentioned that Columbia plans to hold smaller graduation ceremonies instead of the larger commencement that was canceled.

D’Esposito vowed to collaborate with local stakeholders and elected officials to organize a safe commencement ceremony for Columbia students in his district, with or without the president’s assistance.
