Senate Nearing Confirmation of President Biden’s 200th Federal Judge
President Joe Biden has exceeded former President Donald Trump’s rate of judicial confirmations.
Arizona district court nominees Krissa Lanham and Angela Martinez are set to be confirmed by the Senate on Tuesday.
This will bring Biden’s total federal judges confirmed to 200, surpassing his predecessor’s pace, as reported by Politico. However, Biden may struggle to match Trump’s overall total of 234 judicial confirmations given the election-year legislative calendar.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., highlighted Biden’s milestone as a focus on appointing judges who strengthen democracy and uphold the rule of law.
The Senate recently approved Seth Aframe, a federal prosecutor from New Hampshire, to the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Aframe was confirmed after receiving endorsements from various legal professionals, as Bloomberg Law reported.
Despite criticism from Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Aframe’s qualifications were praised by former assistant U.S. attorneys from New Hampshire.
Biden nominated Aframe after Michael Delaney withdrew from consideration due to concerns raised by Senate Democrats over his defense of a repealed New Hampshire law requiring parental notification for a minor’s abortion.
