An unknown number of individuals have lost their lives in the aftermath of a powerful tornado that tore through a small town in Iowa.
Dramatic images show the devastation left in Greenfield, with authorities confirming fatalities and numerous injuries, although exact numbers are not yet available.
The devastation occurred as multiple tornadoes passed through the US Midwest.
Several 250-foot-high wind turbines were knocked down by a tornado in southwest Iowa.
One turbine was engulfed in flames, emitting black smoke from its bent structure.
Officials stated that most of Greenfield, home to around 2,000 residents, was destroyed, with ongoing rescue operations in search of survivors.
Structures, encompassing residences and businesses, were leveled, trees were shredded, and vehicles were hurled down the streets, now littered with heaps of debris.
Sgt Alex Dinkla, a representative for the Iowa State Patrol, expressed, “This tornado has wreaked havoc on a significant portion of this town.
“Unfortunately, we can confirm that there have been casualties. We are currently tallying the numbers.”
He mentioned that Greenfield’s hospital was among the structures damaged, necessitating the transfer of around a dozen injured individuals to other medical facilities.
Local residents assisted each other in salvaging their possessions as they tried to comprehend the recent events.
