Democrats Call for Investigation into Representative Comer’s Involvement in Biden Probe
House Democrats are calling for an ethics investigation into House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer over allegations that he is using his impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden to raise funds for his reelection campaign.
“James Comer is more focused on building his campaign war chest than serving his constituents,” stated Kyle Herrig, executive director of the Congressional Integrity Project, a Democratic-aligned organization, as reported by The Washington Examiner. “His leadership of the Oversight Committee has primarily served two individuals: himself and Donald Trump. He cannot be trusted to conduct proper oversight while using the Committee for his own personal political advantage.”
The organization has sent a letter to the Office of Congressional Ethics requesting an investigation into whether Comer violated house rules by soliciting campaign donations in connection with the impeachment inquiry. House rules prohibit lawmakers from seeking campaign contributions related to their official duties.
Specifically, the Congressional Integrity Project highlighted emails from Comer’s campaign that linked fundraising requests to the impeachment inquiry. One email from March mentioned preparing criminal referrals as part of an investigation and solicited donations. Additionally, an email mentioned obtaining audio files from Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur and suggested that it could impact swing voters, linking official work to campaign fundraising.
Last month, the Congressional Integrity Project called for another ethics investigation after reports surfaced that Comer was negotiating a book deal while leading the impeachment proceedings, a potential violation of House rules regarding copyright royalties for lawmakers.
In response, Comer’s office dismissed the accusations as a “cheap stunt” and reaffirmed his commitment to holding the Biden administration accountable. The office also criticized the Congressional Integrity Project as a “dark money, left-wing funded group” spreading lies about Republicans.
